BASALT ” The Basalt Chamber of Commerce has hired a new executive director following the resignation of Elizabeth Phillips after 10 years at the helm.

Heather Smith was hired and has been working with Phillips to make the transition as smooth as possible. Smith had been the director of communications and operations with the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce since 2004.

Before moving to the Roaring Fork Valley, Smith was the vice president of the Longmont Area Chamber of Commerce.

Brad Elliott, a member of the chamber’s board of directors, said there was a strong response to an advertisement for the opening.

“There is a lot of talent in the valley and we were pleased at the number of people who desired to work with the businesses of Basalt,” Elliott said. “Even with this strong set of candidates, Heather stood out with her great chamber experience and skill set.”

Phillips was credited by chamber officials for building the organization’s membership and helping build events like Basalt River Days and the Summer Music Series. The chamber had 70 members when she became executive director in 1997. It now has 350.
