Basalt candidates to debate on Thursday

Staff report

It’s time to shine for the Basalt mayoral and Town Council candidates who are seeking election April 5.

Aspen Public Radio will hold a forum today from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Basalt Regional Library. The forum is open to the public and will be broadcast live on Aspen Public Radio.

The radio station’s news director, Carolyn Sackariason, will quiz the candidates and take questions from the audience.

The Aspen Times will publish multi-day Q&A coverage March 21 to 25. A question will be posed each day to the two candidates for mayor and the six candidates for the three council seats.

Incumbent Mayor Jacque Whitsitt is squaring off with challenger Rick Stevens.

The race for three at-large council seats features incumbents Rob Leavitt and Herschel Ross and challengers Leroy Duroux, Jennifer Riffle, Auden Schendler and Katie Schwoerer.

The Basalt Chamber of Commerce also is making videos available of recorded interviews with the candidates.

The interviews with Stevens and Whitsitt can be found at www. and the interviews with the council candidates are at QDya4Y&
