Basalt boys hoops edges Hotchkiss

Aspen Times Staff Report

The Basalt High School boys basketball team won a duel with Hotchkiss Saturday 63-62.

Basalt, 4-1 in league and 9-4 overall, entered the fourth quarter against Hotchkiss (3-3, 6-7) with a six-point lead. But the Longhorn lead became a one-point deficit with 17 seconds remaining in the game, before Basalt center Chris Keran provided late-game heroics and the win.

“They had the lead and ball with 17 seconds to go,” Basalt coach Paul Cain said. “We fouled and they missed the front end of a 1-and-1. We got it to half court, called time and then ran a play, but [senior forward] Danny Martinez missed a short jumper.

“Then Chris Keran grabbed the offensive rebound, put it back for a basket and drew a foul,” Cain said.

Keran’s field goal gave Basalt a one-point advantage in the 63-62 win, the team’s ninth win in the last 10 games. Keran led Basalt in scoring with 25 points, and he also grabbed 16 rebounds. Martinez, a forward, netted 12 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Guard Ki Mulcahy added 9 points and dished out 12 assists.

“Hotchkiss is very dangerous. They can score,” Cain said. Hotchkiss shooting guard Matt Burke netted 27 points, including five 3-pointers.

On Thursday, Basalt hosts Roaring Fork at 8 p.m. and then travels to Rangely and West Grand for games Friday and Saturday, respectively.
