Aspen, CO Colorado

Barbara Johnson Hartley, a founding trustee of the Helen K. and Arthur E. Johnson Foundation, died peacefully at her home in Denver June 27 after a long illness. She was almost 89.

A very private person, Mrs. Hartley kept a low profile while also serving at the helm of one of Colorado’s leading philanthropic foundations. During her tenure as board chair, she oversaw grant-making to nonprofit organizations in Colorado that totaled more than $130 million.

She was a part-time resident of Aspen for more than 65 years. Along with her first husband, Jerry, she donated Hillyard Park to the city so there would be one area in the West End that would be free of housing.

Mrs. Hartley continually gave back to her community. She was honored for her generosity many times, and in many ways. She was a thoughtful, very graceful lady.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, at St. John’s Cathedral in Denver.
