`Bapu’ combines yoga, meditation

Aspen Times Staff Report

A well-known teacher of Sahaj Dhyan Yoga, or the yoga of spontaneous meditation, will lead free seminars in the valley tonight and Wednesday.

Shri Punitachariji Maharaj, affectionately known as “Bapu,” is on his first tour of America, having left India for the first time in early September.

Bapu will lead a seminar at 7 p.m. today at the Aspen Community Church, and again Wednesday at 7 p.m., at the Colorado Rocky Mountain School Barn.

“Bapu comes to give wonderful experiences with a full form of energy to all who wish to know what meditation is,” according to a notice announcing his visit. Attendees are told to expect lively evenings of drumming, chanting and Sahaj Dhyan Yoga.

The events are sponsored by the Fellowship of Spirituality, CRMS and Sanctuary House, though tax-deductible donations to cover Bapu’s travel expenses will be accepted.

Bapu, a professor of Sanskrit, is also the founding saint of two Indian Ashrams, or spiritual centers for devout believers.

For those in search of a deeper experience with Bapu, there will be a retreat in Crestone on Oct. 10-14. For registration information, call Iliana at (719) 256-4750 or William Howell at (719) 256-4420.
