Backcountry medical course in Crested Butte

Aspen Times Staff Report

Crested Butte Outdoors will sponsor an intensive backcountry medical training course in Crested Butte from April 26 through May 4.

The 72-hour, hands-on course will enable students to deal with medical emergencies when they are miles from help and dialing 911 is not an option. The course is recommended for all outdoor professionals and those who spend time in remote areas.

Graduates will receive Wilderness First Responder certification from Wilderness Medical Associates, valid for three years. They will also receive BLS level CPR and anaphylaxis certification.

The classes are fast-paced with an emphasis on practical skills. The mornings will be devoted to lectures, and the afternoons and evenings will be spent outdoors working on everything from litter construction to full-scale rescue simulations. All simulations will be videotaped and discussed for enhanced learning.

Classes will be taught by professional instructors from Wilderness Medical Associates, leaders in the field of backcountry training.
