Back on course

Eben Harrell

It’s time. Oh man, I can’t believe it’s time. After months of waiting, watching, imploring the sky to open and the snow to melt, golf season is back. It’s really back.If all goes well, Aspen Golf Club should open for play this afternoon. Suddenly it’s OK to be a golfer again. After months of quietly and half-ashamedly putting on the carpet, swinging in the garage, practicing your grip on ski poles, watching with longing and envy the professionals in short sleeves on TV, it’s time to tee it up once again.Of course, many golfers around here have been playing all year. Courses in Grand Junction usually stay open through the winter. And come March, courses start opening like flowers popping through the ground – Battlement, Rifle, New Castle, Carbondale. But those who drive hours to find a patch of green amid the white are treated on the whole like lunatics. Now, we can rejoin the masses. There’s nothing better than opening day at a golf course. Familiar smiles and swings: It’s a time of great anticipation and purity. What was done in the past means little. The long summer season stretched out before us, its chill mornings and hanging afternoons, is all potential. For those who look at us golfers and scratch their heads at our obsession, remember that golf is played in a garden of sorts. And no matter how much frustration, pain, misery and money is spent in its pursuit, it offers us something new and beautiful each time we tee up. Golf is Eden, and even when our all-too-human frailties disappoint us, we need only return to the first tee to rediscover it.This afternoon, welcome back to paradise.
