“There was a runaway on Mill Street yesterday that completely demolished two vehicles,” the Aspen Daily Times stated May 26, 1888.

“Joseph Gorman was returning from the Midland depot about noon with the Skinner baggage wagon when the team was struck by a wire in the road. One horse kicked and broke the tongue, and the horses started to run away. The broken tongue ran in the ground and hurled Mr. Gorman high in the air but he held to the lines. The team came down Mill Street, plowed into the Clarendon sidewalk and swept away Dr. Harrison’s horse and buggy from in front of the Wheeler block. The buggy was totally demolished. The horses were caught and stopped at the Cooper crossing and luckily no one was injured.”
