“Today is the day set aside for the observance of appropriate ceremonies in honor of the memory of those who yielded up their lives for the preservation of the Union,” asserted the Aspen Daily Times on May 30, 1888.
“It is a day when all should unite freely and heartily in the decoration of the graves of the fallen heroes and in the other memorial services. Arrangements have been perfected for a general parade of civic and military societies, and as the mayor has issued a request for the business houses to be closed during the day, there is nothing except stormy weather that can prevent the carrying out of an exceedingly interesting program.
Wm. B. Root will act as marshal of the day, assisted by aides appointed by each of the societies participating in the parade. The fire companies are doing some very artistic work in decorating their hose carts and the hook and ladder truck, and the other orders promise now to have large turnouts.”
