Aztec still reigns supreme
Dear Editor:
Max Marolt makes many good points in his Dec. 11 letter, “It’s all about Aztec.” Ajax is America’s mountain, and Aztec is what makes America’s Downhill the premier race run on our continent. Hosting a World Cup downhill event would be awesome.
This ski season will see two FIS downhill and two FIS super G events during the week of Feb. 21-29, and Junior Nationals will be held here for the second consecutive year. The junior event will feature both a downhill and super-g circa March 3, 2009.
Last year, speeds of more than 70 mph were turned in during the downhill event. The Junior super G was the most exciting race course I have ever seen. The USSA was so impressed with how Scott Nichols (Aspen Skiing Co.) and Jeff Kai and his staff at AVSC ran Junior Nationals, that they held a national development system speed-terrain camp here immediately after this year’s World Cup event.
So Max, let not your heart be troubled. Aztec is alive and well!
