Autumn and the fall
Leaves quiver golden against the backdrop
of the wine-dark sky, spinning one last dance before
the cold embrace of winter. The brilliance dazzles.
A light snowfall covers the mountaintop, painted
dusky rose by the lingering kiss of the setting sun.
Time moves on, each season dancing to a different hue.
I too twirl in the champagne air in the autumn
of my life and, like the foliage, soon the frosty kiss
of winter snow will come to claim me too.
Then, ecstatically exhausted like the leaves, I will
spin one last effervescent turn to sink into the arms
of winter’s frozen splendor, and gently fall to earth.
