There’s a reason why Karin Huttary is leading the women’s skiercross World Cup circuit. The 27-year-old Austrian has speed. And strategy that can get her through it all ” flat light, wind and snow.

Huttary edged Norwegian Gro Kvinlog (silver) and Ophelie David of France (bronze) for the Winter X Games skiercross gold on Sunday on a snowy course that required more work than racers are accustomed to.

“It’s very, very slow, like a different race,” Huttary said. “I had to change everything. I was a little worried in the double rollers because I hit the flats a little bit. But I knew the other girls would have the same problem there. The strategy is to try to keep focused, try to do your own thing and not watch the other girls.”

Huttary broke out of the gate with the lead and after skating furiously, maintained it throughout the course, although she could sense Tidstrand and David on her heels. As snow fell through all of the semifinal heats, Huttary said exhaustion had set in at the top of the finals course, but the fatigue vanished as soon as the race began.

“I was very tired,” she said. “You had to work through all of the rollers and couldn’t double anything. I was tired, but you forget about that as soon as the gate drops.”
