Auditions set for Aspen Fringe Festival shows

Staff report
The Aspen Times
Aspen, CO, Colorado

ASPEN – The Aspen Fringe Festival will hold auditions for two of its upcoming productions – “Red” and “Hope and Gravity” – from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Rio Grande Meeting Room in the old Aspen Youth Center, adjacent to the Pitkin County Jail. The 2012 Aspen Fringe Festival is set for June 20 to 26 at the Aspen District Theatre.

“Red,” by John Logan and to be directed by festival founder David Ledingham, is about a critical episode in the career of abstract painter Mark Rothko. The play earned six Tony Awards in 2010, including Best Play. There are openings for two professionally trained male actors: Rothko, in his 50s or 60s, and his assistant, Ken, in his 20s. Rehearsals will start June 5 and run for two weeks.

“Hope and Gravity,” a series of connected short stories, will be given a staged reading followed by a Q and A with playwright Michael Hollinger. Hollinger, a winner of the Barrymore Award, is also the writer of “Opus,” which was presented at last year’s Aspen Fringe Festival. There are parts for 10 actors, men and women, in their 20s to 50s. Rehearsals will be afternoons and evenings June 18 to 23.

To sign up for auditions and for more information, email Ledingham at info@aspenfringefestival.org.

The Aspen Fringe Festival will also include a performance by Houston’s Dominic Walsh Dance Theater.
