CARBONDALE ” Police are still searching for the suspect in an attack on a woman in Carbondale last month, but believe the suspect has fled to Mexico.

Lorenzo Garcia Martinez, 43, is wanted on charges of assault and attempted murder of his wife, Esmeralda Candelario, 30, on June 20.

Martinez stabbed Candelario with a pair of scissors four times during a domestic dispute, according to Carbondale Police Chief Gene Schilling.

Martinez reportedly was dragging Candelario outside of their apartment at 1434 Main St., but turned and headed back inside for an unknown reason. That gave Candelario time to struggle to her feet and run to a car in a nearby parking lot to get help from the vehicle’s three occupants.

Two officers showed up in response to the 911 call by one occupant, but Martinez had already left the area and could not be found.

Candelario was hospitalized at Valley View Hospital for several days before being released. She reportedly is now living in a safe house for her protection.

Schilling said a judge issued a warrant June 21, and that officers have interviewed a number of the couple’s neighbors and relatives, at least one of whom said that Martinez is believed to have reached Mexico to avoid prosecution.

Schilling said he was not sure whether extradition of Martinez back to Colorado would be pursued by the district attorney’s office; the district attorney could not be reached for comment Thursday.
