Aspen’s stewards of nordic skiing

Dear Editor:

Cross-country skiing is a Moore family way of life and it is also part of their family legacy to protect and enhance the nordic ski trails for generations to come. An extended thanks to Tom Moore and his family for their gracious donation of a public cross-country ski easement to the Aspen/Snowmass Nordic Council on the property, which was recently purchased by the Crown family. This easement secures a critical skiing link between the High School Trails, the ARC, Tiehack/Buttermilk and the Maroon Creek Club trails to the Moore Open Space trails and on to the Aspen Golf Course. Continuity, not having to stop and take off one’s skis, is vital for a pleasant nordic skiing experience.

For years, Tom and his family have allowed the public to ski the trails on the recently sold property; the trails are still being groomed this winter. Thanks to the Moores for their foresight in protecting this easement as they were not required to do so. Years ago, the Moores also generously donated a nordic skiing easement, the High School Trail, on what is now the Five Trees subdivision which helped secure seamless skiing in a residential area. The Moore family has shown a longtime commitment to the community for which we can all be thankful. Deep roots like theirs make this a better place to live.

Mirte Mallory

Chair, Aspen/Snowmass Nordic Council
