Aspen’s on the jazz map

Dear Editor:From rumors of Billie Holiday playing at the Red Onion in the ’50s to a recording of Cal Tjader at the Onion in the ’60s to the great jazz festival at the Jerome Hotel in 1966, jazz has had a long run in town. Nowhere is it more evident than at the Jazz Aspen Snowmass’ Summer Education Program. The other night, at a showcase for the students called Ribs and Jazz, with good ribs and great jazz, I was astounded at the continuing level of talent that comes to Aspen for this event. The Belly Up had a no-cover night with $15 ribs and five bands introduced by the outstanding bassist Christian McBride. Explosive talent that proves Aspen is on the jazz map, still.Andy HansonAspen Highlands
