Aspen’s Cos Bar soaks up limelight

ASPEN – When Lily Garfield opened her first Cos Bar – in Aspen in 1976 – she had little idea of how far the business would take her.
As it turns out, the boutique took her very far: There are now 12 stores in eight states, and most recently, Cos Bar was featured in the new The Shops at Target.
“I haven’t been able to put my hands on it; it’s been so surreal,” said Garfield. “I still have this little-girl reaction when someone says they saw Cos Bar at Target. …like, ‘Really, did you buy something?!'”
Cos Bar was selected in a national search to be part of the mega-retailer’s pilot The Shops at Target program. To be chosen, stores could not be national chains, nor could they have stores in New York or Los Angeles
“It was about giving a mom-and-pop shop from a little mountain town a place at a national chain,” Garfield said. “They wanted luxury, and perhaps the cachet of the Aspen name.”
In fact, the Target partnership – which included a line of beauty products created by Garfield and ranging in price from $1 to $20 – was as much about promoting the Aspen name as it was about boosting business for Cos Bar.

“It was great exposure for my business and the industry, but it was really about Aspen,” she said, adding that while Cos Bar just wrapped up its time on the shelves at Target, the products are available at target.com through the end of August.
“I am proud to say I am from Aspen, so anything that can help my community is a great thing.”
Aspen officials agree. At Monday’s City Council meeting, Garfield will be honored with a proclamation recognizing her for “her boutique in Target stores that are help spreading the Aspen name,” according to city spokeswoman Mitzi Rapkin.
“That’s a hell of an honor,” said Garfield. “I am very proud of this business, my staff and my husband.”
