The Colorado Department of Transportation will conduct a critical inspection of Castle Creek Bridge in Aspen on Sept. 25, according to a city of Aspen news release.
Residents and commuters should anticipate possible delays and are encouraged to consider alternate transportation options, such as mass transit or cycling.
During the inspection, there will be a temporary one-lane closure on the bridge from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to reduce traffic disruptions during peak hours, according to the release. The Colorado Department of Transportation will manage alternating traffic, allowing vehicles to flow both inbound and outbound. There will be no detour through Aspen’s west end.
The inspection, which takes place every two years, assesses the condition of the bridge’s key components and informs future planning decisions. The bridge has already exceeded its initial lifespan by 12 years.

Castle Creek Bridge is currently rated at 50.3 out of 100, which is considered fair condition. If the new score falls below 50, the bridge will be considered to be in poor condition, prompting potential action by the Colorado Department of Transportation to replace the bridge using eligible funding from the Statewide Bridge and Tunnel Enterprise.
The Bridge and Tunnel Enterprise provides funding once a bridge is assessed at a poor rating.
