Aspen’s Alex Ilic captures junior tennis tourney titles

Alex Ilic, an incoming sophomore at Aspen High School and one of the Skiers’ top returning tennis players, already looks primed for another strong fall season.

Over the weekend, Ilic won both the boys 18 and 16 singles championships at the 14th annual Elks Lodge No. 224 junior tennis tournament at the Aspen Golf and Tennis Club.

He defeated Gabriel Suarez, of Glenwood Springs, in the final of each flight.

The tournament brought in more than 60 junior players from around Colorado — and a few from outside the state — with the Elks Lodge providing T-shirts, trophies and more than 100 barbecue lunches.

Other notable area finishes include Basalt’s Patrick Olson winning the boys 12-under singles flight.

He was also a finalist in the boys 14-under singles flight.

Aspen’s Liam Sunkel won the 14-under consolation singles flight.

Glenwood Springs residents Jonah Kelley (first boys 14-under singles) and David Suarez (first boys 10-under consolation singles) also faired well.

On the girls side, Miah Suarez was first in the 12-under consolation singles, while Anna Crimmel lost in the finals of the 10-under singles flight.

The Aspen Golf and Tennis Club has one more tournament remaining this season.

Beginning Aug. 19, the club will host the three-day Aspen City Championships, a United States Tennis Association-sanctioned age-division tournament.
