Aspenites to turn out the lights

Aspen Times Staff Report
Aspen, CO Colorado

ASPEN ” The city of Aspen is inviting local residents and businesses to participate in “Earth Hour” by turning off lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The third annual World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour aims to reach more than 1 billion people in 1,000 cities around the world, asking communities, business and governments to turn off lights for one hour to send a global message on climate change.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008, the message had grown to 50 million people. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Coliseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote.
