Aspen X-Games fireworks irk commissioner
The Aspen Times
A Pitkin County commissioner scolded an ESPN representative Tuesday for waiting until just weeks before the Winter X-Games to ask permission to include fireworks at the event’s final concert.
“What are we going to say now?” said Commissioner Michael Owsley. “The community needs more than a two-week notice. There’s a limit to the community’s tolerance for this sized event.”
Vanessa Anthes of ESPN said the fireworks are visual only and will not include any noise or concussive effects. The Sunday concert featuring Kygo is scheduled to run from 3:30-5 p.m.
Owsley said he would have liked to have had the fireworks proposal sooner. The Aspen Fire Department already approved the fireworks permit.
Winter X-Games occurs the last weekend in January at Buttermilk Mountain and will feature concerts each night, though only the Sunday show will include the fireworks.
