Aspen Women to Women debuts

ASPEN – A recent Aspen Business Luncheon featuring a panel billed as “local women of influence” has inspired a new gathering – Aspen Women to Women.

Organizer Todd Shaver, the man behind the business luncheon, enlisted Margot Moselle to run the women’s group and secured the bar at BB’s Kitchen on Thursday for the inaugural gathering of women interested in lunch and conversation. They anticipated accommodating 15 people, but Moselle said she had to turn away 30 people by Tuesday morning. The email invitation went out Monday evening.

Thursday’s lunch seating has been bumped up to 20 people – the limits of the space – and Shaver said he is now considering one event each month at a larger venue, someplace that can accommodate 60 to 70 women. The initial plan was a gathering of 15 women every other Thursday.

“I’m happy and surprised that people want to come,” Moselle said. “I’m surprised so many people want to come.”

The idea for Aspen Women to Women is patterned after the pared-down event that replaced the Aspen Business Luncheon during the fall offseason. Small lunchtime gatherings took place, though the business luncheon has since returned to its larger space at the Hotel Jerome for a weekly buffet and a guest speaker or panel discussion on Wednesdays. On Jan. 25,, though, the luncheon will be a roundtable at BB’s limited to the first 20 people who signed up.

The Aspen Business Luncheon grew out of the Friday Men’s Club lunch in Aspen, a 37-year tradition and a mostly male affair.

Several weeks ago, the business luncheon program at the Jerome featured a panel that included Catherine Anne Provine, executive director of the Buddy Program; Kitty Boone, director of public programs for the Aspen Institute; Laura Welch, chief development officer at Foundation for Social Change; and Nancy Spears, a local businesswoman. Carolyne Heldman, of Aspen Public Radio and producer of CrossCurrents, a weekly public-affairs show, moderated.

Shaver was inspired. Said Moselle’s the email announcing Aspen Women to Women: “During the course of that luncheon there was talk of getting together with other women to discuss the many things that come up in our lives in Aspen, involving work, play, culture, parties, events, living with men, living without men, what we read, what we wear, what we do, how we integrate families with business, and on and on.”

Rather than having a speaker formally address a particular topic, Moselle envisions weekly discussion themes. On Thursday, the theme is health and fitness, and Jordan Bullock, owner of Pure Barre Aspen, has been invited to talk about her business and lifestyle.

Moselle, CEO of a new business called Sprout – with a focus on marketing, events and networking – sees a regular gathering of women only as a way to share stories and successes and help attendees get to know a cross-section of the community.

“There are a lot of really influential, amazing women out there,” she said.
