The Aspen Chamber Resort Association’s visitor center is reopening in the heart of downtown Aspen on May 1 after moving from its eight-year home on Mill Street by the Roaring Fork River.
According to Jennifer Albright Carney, chief operating officer for the Aspen Chamber, the visitor center will be located in the Aspen Armory where the former city council chamber and offices were. The center will be open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
“We’re very excited to be heading up to the central core location,” Carney said. “It’s really great for visitors to step outside of the visitor center and see Aspen Mountain in the background and interact with our businesses immediately. That energy of the core will be a fun change.”
Carney said the move is primarily due to planned construction in the current building, which the city of Aspen owns. The city is also working on a redevelopment of the Armory, estimated to begin in about a year’s time. Carney confirmed that the visitor center will remain in the Amory until the renovation begins, and the Aspen Chamber is currently in talks with the city about an addition to the Armory that would continue to house the visitor center.
The new visitor center will not only offer guests immediate access to Aspen core, but it will also provide public restrooms. Carney said a primary question that visitor services get at its current center is where public restrooms are available.
The visitor center has been in its Mill Street location, known as the Old Powerhouse building, since November 2017. The visitor center will be open through Friday, April 18, before closing while the Aspen Chamber team moves all its items into the new space.
Once it reopens, Carney said the new visitor center will continue serving all visitors with extensive knowledge of the community, recommendations for activities at different times of the year, and answers to any questions.
Aspen Chambers continues to operate three additional visitor center locations at the Guest Pavilion on the Cooper Avenue Mall, at the Wheeler Opera House, and at the Aspen/Pitkin Airport. However, the visitor center in the airport will be closed while the airport is closed for runway construction the month of May.
