Aspen Veteran’s Day ceremony set Tuesday

ASPEN ” Veteran’s Day will be celebrated in Aspen at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Veterans’ Memorial next to the Pitkin County Courthouse, 511 E. Main St.

According to Lt. Col. Dick Merritt (Ret.), the ceremony will include a Cold War recognition, a new feature in which a medal will be awarded to local veteran Janine Barth, a former intelligence officer.

The ceremonies also will include Kurt Barth, Janine’s son, and an Iraq War veteran, leading the flag salute/Pledge of Allegiance, and Chuck Barth, a veteran of the Gulf War, reading the poem “In Flanders Field,” a celebrated poem about World War I written by a Canadian medic, Lt. Col. John McCrae.

In addition, Merritt said, certificates will be handed out to other veterans from different U.S. engagements, and the observance will feature the placement of poppies at the memorial that Merritt recently brought back from a veterans’ cemetery in Florence, Italy.

GrassRoots Television, Cable Channel 12, will air interviews Tuesday of local veterans. The interviews were conducted by Merritt and other local Veterans Affairs officials. The interviews will run until midnight.
