Aspen to showcase Winter X Games at ski show
ASPEN – Aspen is hoping to make a big impression with the 17,000 people expected to attend the ski industry’s largest sales show of the year later this month in Denver.
The ESPN Winter X Games at Buttermilk will be broadcast live on a 26-by-26-foot screen erected in Denver’s Skyline Park, just off the 16th Street Mall. The X Games coincide with the Snow Show held by SnowSports Industries of America (SIA), Jan. 28-31.
The Aspen Skiing Co. is teaming with the city of Denver and Comcast Cable to provide the big screen, according to Jeanne Mackowski, Skico vice president of marketing. The park can hold about 2,500 people in tiered seating.
The screening of the games will be part of “The World’s Largest Apres Ski + Ride Party,” presented by The Denver Post.
The Skico wants to showcase the X Games at the SIA show since it will bring together so many people from the industry, Mackowski said Monday. The show is for ski and snowboard equipment manufacturers and retailers, so it’s a captive audience for the X Games. The Skico expects some attendees to make the trip into the mountains to check the games out firsthand.
The Skico is also targeting Colorado college students during the X Games. The company is selling the two-day College X Pass for two days of skiing or riding during the X Games for $87. The picture pass is only valid for two days during Jan. 28-31, and it must be purchased by Jan. 27. Additional days can be purchased for $49 per day.
Buyers must be 24 years old or younger, and they must present a valid ID from an accredited four-year college when they pick up a pass. The College X Pass can be purchased online at http://www.aspensnowmass.com/deals.3
