The Wheeler Opera House will welcome “Mission Mt. Mangart,” an award-winning documentary film about the “mighty story of the legendary 10th Mountain Division,” on Tuesday, March 4, at 6:30 p.m.
Presented by the Aspen Historical Society, the special event includes a screening of filmmaker and professional skier Chris Anthony’s latest work, followed by an in-person discussion with himself.
Celebrated as Best Historical Documentary at the Cannes World Film Festival in 2021, “Mission Mt. Mangart” tells the story of America’s first and only ski troop, the 10th Mountain Division, established at Camp Hale near Leadville — just over Independence Pass from Aspen.
This experimental light infantry unit spent part of its training in the valleys in the area. After fighting in World War II, many 10th Mountain Division veterans returned to the American West and helped develop ski areas — including those in the Roaring Fork Valley. The film chronicles everything from the unit’s grueling training regiments to its harrowing battles in Italy, highlighting pivotal moments in their history.
“Aspen Historical Society is honored to bring Chris’s latest film to audiences in the Roaring Fork Valley, whose own ski history overlaps with the story of the 10th,” says Kelly Murphy, president and CEO of Aspen Historical Society. “It’s hard to overstate the impact this dedicated group of mountaineers and veterans had on communities like Aspen when they returned to introduce recreational skiing. We are looking forward to welcoming the community to a fascinating and enjoyable evening.”
The film screening is generously underwritten by Lex Tarumianz, Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty. All attendees will be automatically entered to win a gift giveaway from Alps & Meters, and a signed film poster will be auctioned off to benefit the Chris Anthony Youth Initiative Project.
