Aspen to have new ice rink
December 5, 2009
ASPEN – Soon there will be a new ice rink in town, and the difference between it and the other three in Aspen is that it’s free.
The city of Aspen is for the first time creating an ice rink behind the Aspen Recreation Center near Rotary Field.
Hundreds of gallons of water have been poured on the manmade rink in the past few days, which is freezing quickly due to the sub-zero temperatures.
The frozen pond should be ready for the public by mid-December, said Nancy Lesley, the city’s special events director. She added that the opening is weather dependent.
The impetus for the rink came out of the annual city parks and rec retreat.
“One of our goals is to think about enhancing the facilities and be as creative as possible,” Lesley said. “We thought, ‘why not?'”

Using the rink is free if you have skates. If not, skate rental is $3 at the ARC.
The rink is near the sledding hill, which also is free. For those who don’t have sleds, rental is $5 at the ARC. The facility also this year will rent snowshoes, Lesley said.
Hours of operation at the rink will vary, and park and rec officials are considering lighting for nighttime fun. In the meantime, Lesley suggested people bring their “skates and a head lamp,” or get out there during a full moon.
