ASPEN ” The Town to Town Tour is back for a second run.

The Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers, which debuted the nordic ski tour on the Rio Grande Trail from Aspen to Basalt last winter, will host the second annual tour on Saturday, Jan. 31.

Billed as a fun, non-competitive cross-country ski and snowshoe event for individuals and families, the tour has modified its start and end points this year, making both ends of the route more easily accessible.

Instead of starting at Stein Park, the route begins at Rio Grande Park in Aspen this time. The start station will be open from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The tour begins in Aspen at 10 a.m.

Those who don’t want to ski the whole way can jump in at the mid-course start in Woody Creek, where a station will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This year’s finish is at Basalt High School instead of the Roaring Fork Club, with an early bail-out point at Old Snowmass.

There will be a party with food and prizes at the finish area tent, which will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. at the high school.

The entry fee is $25 in advance and $35 the day of the tour for individuals, or $35 and $60, respectively, for families of up to four participants.

Participants are encouraged to walk, ski or take a RFTA bus to the Rio Grande Park start; a limited number of $5 all-day parking passes for the Rio Grande Parking Garage will be available at the registration table in the park. Those who leave a car in Aspen can get a free RFTA bus ride from Basalt back to Aspen in the afternoon.

Limited parking will be available at Woody Creek; participants are encouraged to carpool or use the RFTA shuttle service from Basalt to Woody Creek, starting at 10 a.m.

Tour organizers are encouraging participants to do the tour in costume. A costume winner will be chosen based on who gets the loudest applause at the after-race party.
