Aspen store to feature songwriters
ASPEN – Monarch Street guitar and clothing shop Two Old Hippies is hosting a series of Saturday performances showcasing local singer-songwriters.Ian Fellerman, the store’s “guitar guru,” said the intent of the series is to shine a light on Aspen-area talent. The first performance, by Trenton Allan, is set for 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday.A limited number of seats will be available next to the artist, who will be in the store’s upstairs guitar studio. The live performances, however, can still be heard throughout the store via a sound system.Other scheduled performances include Dave Taylor on Feb. 9, Steve Koch on Feb. 16 and Patrick Fagan on Feb. 23. Fellerman intends to extend the series through March and April.”We’re going to do it at least through March, and probably April, every Saturday,” he said. “What we’re trying to do is make it an intimate showcase where you can really sit and listen to the artists. That’s the exciting thing about doing it in the store.”This gives the community a chance to actually hear the songwriters. Sometimes when you’re in a noisy bar you can’t really hear them and what they have to say.”He said he’s lining up artists who have meaningful compositions as well as good stage personalities. “They have to have something going on with their music,” Fellerman said. “We’re going to have fun, as well.”He said the creation of the Saturday songwriters’ series has nothing to do with the fact that the annual 7908 Songwriters Festival at the Wheeler Opera House isn’t going to happen this year. The three-year-old festival, co-produced by John Oates, of the pop duo Hall & Oates, had been scheduled for late March until organizers suspended it in early December because it was coming together too slowly. “There are a lot of artists in town that have a lot to say with their music,” Fellerman said. “It’s just going to be an acoustic guitar and their voices.” All the artists will use instruments manufactured by Bedell and Breedlove, guitar brands either designed or owned by Tom Bedell, co-owner of Two Old Hippies.”This is the first time we’ve ever done this in the store,” Fellerman said. “The artists might play some covers, but we’re emphasizing original talent.”Fellerman is an up-and-coming artist in his own right. Formerly the leader of Abyssal Creatures, he now has a project under the name Bashful Hips. His music can be found on YouTube and also http://www.bashfulhips.com. Singer-songwriters who would like to be considered for future performances may call Fellerman at Two Old Hippies at firstname.lastname@example.org
