Aspen, Snowmass bookings down for offseason months

ASPEN – Lodging occupancy in Aspen for the final week of October will be down about 10 percent compared to last year, based on bookings made by Oct. 15.

The resort’s latest occupancy report was released Thursday.

It projects 13 percent occupancy next week, compared to 21 percent based on bookings made by the same point last year. Actual occupancy for the final week of October 2008 wound up at 23 percent.



Bookings for November, a slow month for the resort by any standard, are also running behind last year’s pace. Reservations made by Oct. 15 indicate a 9 percent occupancy rate for the first week of November, compared to 16 percent in 2008, based on bookings made by the same point last year. Actual occupancy for the first week of November 2008 was 29 percent – the highest for the month.

The report projected a 10 percent occupancy rate for the second week of November, compared to 12 percent last year, based on reservations made by Oct. 15. Actual occupancy last year was 27 percent for the week.




Occupancy for the month of October, based on reservations placed by Oct. 15, stood at 27 percent. Last year’s actual occupancy for the month was 31 percent.

November occupancy hovered at 29 percent last year. By Oct. 15, 2008, reservations put the occupancy rate for November at 15 percent, compared to 11 percent this year, based on bookings by mid-October.

The report is based on reservations on the books at 16 hotels, lodges and condo management companies, representing 74 percent of the short-term accommodations available in Aspen.

The Snowmass occupancy report shows just 3 percent occupancy for the final week of October, based on reservations placed by Oct. 15. Actual occupancy for the week last year stood at 11 percent.

Bookings by Oct. 15 put occupancy for both the first and second weeks of November at 2 percent, compared to 6 to 7 percent based on bookings by the same point last year. Actual occupancy last year in Snowmass was 10 percent for the first week of November and 11 percent in the second week.

Actual occupancy in Snowmass for October 2008 was 14 percent – all of it booked by Oct. 15. This year, bookings by that date indicated a 6 percent occupancy for the month.

November occupancy stands at 2 percent for the month, based on bookings by Oct. 15. Last year’s comparable number was 6 percent. Actual occupancy hit 11 percent.

The Snowmass report is based on reservations at 13 properties, representing 90 percent of the available accommodations in Snowmass.
