Aspen retailers see slight uptick

ASPEN – Aspen retailers rang up $66.8 million in sales in January, a 3 percent improvement over the same month last year.

That’s according to the Consumption Tax Report for January, which the city of Aspen made public Tuesday.

Aspen’s 12 industry sectors posted the following showings in January:

• Accommodations (hotels and lodges): $22.9 million, up 7 percent.

• Restaurants and bars: $10.9 million, no change.

• Sports equipment and clothing: $5.9 million, up 5 percent.

• Clothing: $6 million, down 1 percent.

• Food and drug: $4.9 million, up 11 percent.

• Liquor: $923,685, up 2 percent.

• General retail: $1.9 million, down 1 percent.

• Construction: $2.1 million, up 1 percent.

• Luxury goods: $3.8 million, down 25 percent.

• Utilities: $4.6 million, up 7 percent.

• Automobile: $1.3 million, up 11 percent.

• Miscellaneous: $1.2 million, up 21 percent.

The city also collected $1.39 million in sales tax revenue, 2 percent better than January 2012 and 7 percent more than the city’s projections for January 2013, the report said.

January accounts for between 11 and 13 percent of the city’s entire year’s sales and collections, noted Finance Director Don Taylor in the report.
