Aspen police bust dog

ASPEN Aspen police have issued a municipal citation to Rose Marie Nelson for her bull mastiff’s alleged attack of a yellow lab in Koch Park.Neither dog was on a leash the morning of Friday, May 25, but when the two animals met near the Midland Trail, Nelson’s 100-pound mastiff, Savannah, allegedly attacked Sandy, a 6-year-old yellow lab, according to Jon Tollefson, the lab’s owner and president of Alpine Bank in Aspen.”That dog for no reason went totally ballistic. It was totally unprovoked … [it] latched on to her face,” Tollefson said. While his dog yelped and Tollefson jumped in to separate the animals, Nelson called her dog away and left, Tollefson said.Tollefson took his dog Sandy to the veterinarian for treatment of two puncture wounds – one near the eye and one behind the ear.”That’s a dangerous dog to have running around here,” Tollefson said, adding he wants to know the dog is under control, on a leash and wearing a muzzle in the future. “The dog has no business being off a leash; she had zero control over the dog.”Aspen Community Safety Officer Gretchen Born said the mastiff must be kept under control and on a leash all the times.Nelson will face a hearing in municipal court June 27 and possible fines or further sanctions if the dog has a history of attacks, Born said.
