Aspen office supply store burglarized

An unknown person broke into Sandy’s Office Supply over the weekend, pried open an office door and stole $300 in cash, police said Monday.

It was unclear how the thief was able to enter an outside door to gain access to the office in the building’s basement level on East Hyman Avenue in downtown Aspen, said Aspen police Sgt. Rick Magunson. The person may have known a key code to open the door because it was not damaged, he said.

The burglary occurred between about 5:30 p.m. Sunday and 8:15 a.m. Monday, Magnuson said. The $300 was in a cabinet where store employees keep cash, he said. Nothing else was stolen.

“It does seem like someone might have known about the location (of the cash),” Magnuson said.

The office door had pry marks on it, so police believe the burglar used a tool to open it, he said.

There is no video surveillance of the building, Magnuson said, adding that police will continue to investigate the break-in.

A phone message left for a manager at Sandy’s on Monday was not returned.
