Aspen offers food tax refunds

Aspen Times staff report
Aspen, CO Colorado

ASPEN – Aspen residents who resided within the city limits for the entire year of 2009 are eligible to receive a $50 food tax refund.

Applications are available online at and at the Finance Department window on the first floor of City Hall, or call 920-5040. The deadline for applications is April 15 at 5 p.m.

Applicants who were a registered voter prior to Jan. 1, 2009, and whose address has not changed, are not required to provide any additional proof that they are city residents, but must still file an application by the deadline to receive the refund.

Those who have never received a refund, or whose address has changed, must provide proof they lived within the city limits for all of 2009. Accepted documentation includes a signed lease, utility bills or cancelled checks from January 2009 and December 2009 that show a physical address.

The city created the refund program as an incentive to encourage voters to support a sales tax referendum. The refund was intended to reimburse voters for the approximate amount of sales tax they would pay annually on grocery purchases as the result of an additional a 1 percent sales tax.
