Aspen mayor to tout bike race while in Europe

Aspen Times staff report
Aspen, CO Colorado

ASPEN – Aspen Mayor Mick Ireland said one of the goals during his upcoming European vacation will be to promote the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, a professional bicycling event that will roll through Aspen on Aug. 24.

Ireland plans to mix business with pleasure while visiting the cities of Garmisch, Germany; Davos, Switzerland; Abetone, Italy; and Chamonix, France. Garmisch, Davos and Chamonix are among Aspen’s sister cities. He also may travel to Florence, Italy, having been invited by that city’s mayor.

Ireland said his trip will largely be personal and he won’t be vacationing on the city’s dime. However, he plans to promote Aspen’s recreational offerings as well as the cycling event, in which about 120 riders will tour 11 Colorado cities and towns in a mix of mountain, sprint and downtown stages from Aug. 22-28.

His vacation will run from Monday through July 5. Ireland said he will miss the June 27 City Council meeting, noting that it will be only the second meeting he’s missed since become mayor in 2007.
