ASPEN ” Police are looking for someone who apparently went on an dangerous joy ride early Monday morning in Aspen’s West End.

A 1996 black Jeep Grand Cherokee allegedly was stolen from 210 W. Francis St. sometime after 11 p.m. Sunday, according to police.

However, the alleged thief did not make it far. Police said the Cherokee slammed into a GMC Yukon near the intersection of Sixth and Smuggler streets.

“It bounced off the [Yukon], left a trail of glass to Seventh Street, made a right on Seventh and careened off some poor person’s rental car,” officer Jeff Fain said. The rental was a Suzuki sport utility vehicle.

After that, the Jeep somehow made it to the top of a very large snow bank and was abandoned by the driver, Fain said.

Fain said the owner of the Jeep, who left the keys in the unlocked vehicle, had noticed that the vehicle was OK at 11 p.m. and missing at 5:30 a.m.

Neighbors heard noises consistent with a car crash around 4 a.m., Fain said.

The theft and accidents still are under investigation, and police currently are processing evidence collected at the scene.

“We’re hoping for fingerprints,” Fain said. “I think it was a drunkie walking home from a bar.”
