Aspen High hockey beats Steamboat Springs 4-2 for third straight win

The Aspen High School hockey team won its second straight conference game in as many days on Saturday in a 4-2 win over host Steamboat Springs at Howelsen Ice Arena.

The two teams had met in the final game before the holiday break, a 4-0 rout by the Skiers on Dec. 21 at Lewis Ice Arena. Saturday’s rematch was a much stiffer test.

Aspen led 1-0 after two periods in Steamboat, a first-period goal by Matthew Rigney giving the Skiers the edge. The Sailors rallied to tie the game early in the third period with a goal by Cameron Colombo, but AHS answered less than two minutes later with a goal by Arthur Munves to make it 2-1.

Once again, Steamboat rallied to find the equalizer, Griffin Maltby’s goal with just over four minutes to play making it 2-2. The Skiers scored the game winner in the final minute, a power-play goal by Dominic Lanese. Connor Chesner added on another goal for good measure in the final 30 seconds.

Steamboat dropped to 2-7 overall with the loss, while Aspen improved to 4-3-2 overall after its third straight win. The Skiers also won 3-2 at Glenwood Springs on Friday night.

Next up will be a rematch with the Demons, who have a varsity hockey team for the first time this season. The teams will meet Friday night at Lewis Ice Arena. AHS will also host top-10 Fort Collins on Saturday afternoon.
