Dr. Bernard James, a school safety law professor at Pepperdine University, is slated to speak about school safety, student First Amendment rights, and school safety law and liability on Friday at the Aspen District Theater.

James is a frequent keynote speaker at National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) conferences, and regularly speaks to audiences of over 1,000 attendees, according to Pitkin County Sheriff Deputy Cameron Daniel.

“After the swatting (prank calling emergency services to dispatch large forces to a specific address) incidents that took place a couple years ago at Aspen School District, we decided to try and create an event where we would get all of our local school administrators and law enforcement in a room together and start talking about those national trends and best practices on more of a local level,” Daniel said.

According to Daniel, Nick Sadowsky, founder of SOS Technologies, made a donation that made it possible for James to give a talk in Aspen.

The talk will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to noon with doors opening at 7:30 a.m. Attendees can expect to learn about how to handle unauthorized campus visitors, how the First Amendment applies to students in and outside of school, and emerging trends in education law, among other key points.

According to a press release, the event is part of an effort to increase safety in Roaring Fork Valley school districts.

Seating will be first come first serve. Free registration is available through this link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/dr-bernard-james-keynote-speaker-school-safety-law-tickets-1320134952179?aff=oddtdtcreator
