Aspen High hockey, hoops host games

Aspen Times Staff Report

The Aspen High School hockey team hosts a pair of big games at the Aspen Ice Garden today and Saturday.

With a league record of 9-1, Aspen is the No. 2 team in the Colorado High School League standings. The Skier team hosts Mitchell (1-6) today at 2:30 p.m.

On Saturday at 11:30 a.m., Aspen takes on Air Academy (5-2), a team that’s tied for third in league standings. With a win Saturday, Aspen, playing in its first-ever season in the high school league, can lock up second place in the league and the No. 2 seed in the state tournament, which begins later this month.

“This is a chance for us to secure no worse than second place,” said Aspen coach Brett Kurtz, “which is pretty admirable in our first year in the league. To get first place, we’ll need some help from other teams.”

The Aspen High School boys and girls play just one game this weekend. The teams host Meeker Saturday.

The Aspen girls, 5-0 in Class 3A Western Slope League play, and 11-3 overall, play Meeker (0-6, 4-9) at 4 p.m. Saturday. The Aspen boys, the No. 1 team in the league with a 5-0 league record (10-4 overall), tip off with Meeker (0-6, 1-12) at 5:30 p.m.
