Aspen has eye on 5th Ryder Cup

The real Ryder Cup doesn’t start until Friday, but the frenzy of high-intensity, match play golf will be coming to the mountains a little early.

Today and Tuesday at Cotton Ranch Golf Course in Gypsum, 20 of the best golfers from Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley will take on a team of 20 top golfers from the Vail area in the fifth annual Aspen-Vail Ryder Cup.

So far, the rivalry between the two ski towns hasn’t lived up to expectations. The Aspen team, consisting of local pros and former city champions, has won the first four cups. But that may all change this year.

“They’re supposed to be tougher this year,” said Sean Groover, the captain of the Aspen team. Groover said that Vail’s squad is bolstered this year by some strong new players.

The two-day competition will tee off today with team matches. Two-man teams will square off in the morning round for better-ball matches, and again in the afternoon round with a two-man alternating shot format.

After 36 holes of competition today, each player will only play 18 holes tomorrow during the singles matches. Each team or individual victory is worth one point.
