Aspen Golf Club delays opening

Staff report

ASPEN – The Aspen Golf Club won’t make its scheduled opening Monday because of the recent spring storms that have hit the area.

Each year, the club opens on April 1 if the weather cooperates. That’s not the case this year.

“The Aspen Golf Club will be open for play in April, weather-dependent,” said Steve Aitken, director of golf at Aspen Golf Club. “It’s been a unique winter. Permanent snow cover did not arrive until December 4.

“These past two weeks of March have been unusually cold with precipitation holding the snow cover on the golf course and delaying our normal spring melt off. It will not take long once warmer weather returns, but until then, we are in a holding pattern for golf.”

Golfers can jump-start their game on the club’s golf simulator, which opened in December and will be up and running next week when Red Mountain Grill reopens. At $35 per hour, the golf simulator allows you to play real golf with real equipment on real courses.

The Aspen Golf Shop will begin adding merchandise daily. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily beginning Thursday. Red Mountain Grill also will be open during limited hours.

Passes for the 2013 season still are available online at http://www.aspenrecreation.com or by visiting the Aspen Recreation Center or Red Brick Recreation Center.
