Aspen girls hoops breaks Grand Valley

Aspen Times Staff Report

Before the Aspen High School girls basketball team took off for Christmas break, the varsity took out the smaller, Class 2A Grand Valley 63-31 in Parachute Tuesday night.

“It’s great going into a nice long break on a positive note,” coach Lance Finkbeiner said yesterday.

Aspen improved to 5-3 overall on the season with the win.

Sophomore center Lizzie Suiter led four Aspen players who scored in double figures, knocking down 18 points while grabbing 14 rebounds.

Muriel Hale, a junior, scored 12 points for Aspen, “and had a great game shooting for us,” Finkbeiner said, and captain Cory Reno also contributed a dozen.

Senior point guard Ellen Falender, last year’s assists leader in the entire state, dished out 10 assists Tuesday and also scored 13 points. Falender is leading all of Class 3A in assists to date this season, averaging more than 9 per game.

“I’m happy we have balanced scoring like that – it’s tough to stop,” Finkbeiner said. “They can stop one, but not four.”

“It was also a great defensive effort,” he said. “We were able to get quite a few steals out of traps that we ran. And in the second half, we made some adjustments to stop [Grand Valley’s] leading scorer. She didn’t score any after that.”

Aspen plays its next game at home on Jan. 6 against Delta. The Skiers open their Class 3A Western Slope League schedule Jan. 13 at Rangely.
