Aspen Elementary School students share their favorite Thanksgiving dishes

With Thanksgiving finally upon us, Aspen Elementary School students described what they like best about the Thursday feast. 

First grade

Turkey was the dish of choice in Jamie Mahaffey’s first grade class.

“On Thanksgiving, I love turkey,” Emily said. “Turkey makes me feel good and funny. Also, we eat chicken nuggets. I like Thanksgiving so much!”



“Mi favorita comida de dia de gracias es pavo. Pavo es jugoso,” Jose said. “Por eso, pavo es mi comida favorita.”

“I like Thanksgiving because I like pumpkin pie. I like the spices,” Leonardo said




“My favorite Thanksgiving food is bread, turkey, and lemon pie,” Madison said. “They are all my favorites!”

“Turkey is my favorite food for Thanksgiving,” Rima said. “Turkey is yummy!” 

“My favorite Thanksgiving foods are turkey and apple pie,” Davis said. “I am going to Indiana to have Thanksgiving with my grandma. I like turkey because it makes me happy, and apple pie is sweet and crumbling.”

Second grade

Rixt Clifford’s second grade class, though, had mixed opinions when it came to the Thanksgiving feast. Turkey, pumpkin pie, and mashed potatoes all finished strong.

“I like mashed potatoes because they’re so juicy and creamy,” Cooper said.

“My favorite dish is turkey because I love eating the leg off it and seeing the bone! I like mashed potatoes because they’re smooth in your mouth,” Addie said.

“I like turkey because it’s juicy,” Cash said. 

“I like apple pie because it’s a very good dessert,” Taylor said.

“Mashed potatoes are the best because my mommy makes them creamy,” Harper said.

“Turkey is my favorite because it’s so chewy and juicy. I love to peel off the skin and eat it!” Meadow said.

“Pumpkin pie because I love to eat it, and it’s really good,” Leola said.

“Turkey because me and my brother have a contest to see who can eat the most turkey,” JJ said.

“Apple pie because the crust is crunchy, and it tastes really good,” Maisey said.

“My favorite dish on Thanksgiving is pumpkin pie because I love pumpkin, and I love the crust,”  Evelyn said.

“My favorite dish is apple pie because when you cut up the apples and put them into the pie, you can taste the apple skin,” Pippa said. 

“I like pumpkin pie the best because when you put it in your mouth, it feels like a massage in your mouth,” Phoebe said. 

“I like pumpkin pie because the middle is soft and not crunchy,” Ayansa said.

“I like blueberry pie because it tastes good,” Jake said.

“I like turkey, mashed potatoes, and gravy because it makes a really good dish all together,” Buddy said.

“I like turkey because it’s juicy,” Bronson said.

“I like blueberry pie because it’s squishy in the middle and hard on the outside, and it tastes good together,”  Vivian said.

“I like turkey and cranberry sauce because it goes good together, and you can dip the turkey in the cranberry sauce,” CJ said.

Third grade

Leah Hittesdorf’s third grade class also liked turkey, although cranberry sauce made a guest appearance.

“My favorite Thanksgiving dish is mashed potatoes with gravy and biscuits because my parents make them really good with garlic, butter, and milk,” Juniper said. “It’s delicious!”

“My favorite Thanksgiving dish is turkey because my dad makes it really easy to bite into!” Coulter said.

“My favorite Thanksgiving dish is cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes because they are sweet and hot together!” Ellie said.

“My favorite Thanksgiving dish is mashed potatoes and GRAVY because when you mix them all up together, they turn into a sauce, and you can put it on really, anything!” Zoe said.

“My favorite Thanksgiving dish is pie because I love pie under any circumstance,” Simone said.

“My favorite dish is popcorn because it is a family tradition to go to the movies for Thanksgiving every single year!” Teal said.

Fourth grade

“My favorite Thanksgiving dish is toast with butter and hard boiled eggs; it is SO amazing,” Indy said. “The butter is and the eggs are so delicious. I remember my mom making it for me!”

“My favorite Thanksgiving dish is my mom’s turkey because me and my sisters make it with her while my dad is decorating the house,” Kayl said. “I also like the cookies with small pieces of chocolate.”

“My favorite Thanksgiving dish is my family’s pie because it melts in your mouth,” Logan said. “A memory I have is going crazy in the kitchen when I was young and had so much fun!”

“My favorite Thanksgiving dish is salad with dressing, lettuce, and more in it because I’m a vegetarian, and I go on a hut trip each to Lindley Hut year with my friend,” Ruby said.

“On Thanksgiving, I love to eat pumpkin pie; we eat it every Thanksgiving!” Santi said. 

“My favorite Thanksgiving dish is tamales. They are my favorite because my mom puts a special sauce on them,” Keyla said. “A memory that I have is that my family always comes over to celebrate, and I love it.”

“Me, my mom, and my brother — we each making something,” Liv said. “This year, I am going to make dessert, which is strawberries, then I put a mini marshmallow on a pretzel and make two of them … and it looks like a turkey!”

“My favorite Thanksgiving dish is chocolate pie that my grandma makes with a filling of chocolate and fudge,” Emma said. “I remember when I came over to her house on Thanksgiving, and I had never tried chocolate pie before … and I loved it!”

“The best part of the Thanksgiving is definitely the turkey,” Colin said. “I have memories making it with my grandma, and we had to use a thermometer to measure the heat of the turkey.”

“My favorite dish is my dad’s steak surrounded by turkey pieces with celery on top and cut up salmon on it,” Tom said. 

“My favorite Thanksgiving food is the gravy because I always get to make it with my mom every year while Nana sets the table,” Shelley said. 

“My favorite Thanksgiving dish is the most yummiest Mexican pozole that my wonderful mother makes with kale, onion, and the most yummiest soup,” Eddy said. 

“My favorite thing on Thanksgiving is turkey stuffed with my dad’s homemade stuffing and drizzled in his gravy,” Waylon said. “The reason I like turkey is because l like meat.”

“My favorite Thanksgiving dish is the southwest salad from Big Wrap,” Quinlan said. “A memory that I have is every year at Thanksgiving, me and my friends go to the Lindley Hut.”

“The best dish in Thanksgiving in my opinion is cranberry sauce because there are pears and cranberries, and it’s not dry like the rest of the meal, but it is also sweet like candy but not bad for you,” Parker said. 

“My favorite Thanksgiving food is the pie because my mom makes it, and she makes it with pumpkin or apple, and we have it with ice cream,” Piper said. 

“My favorite Thanksgiving dish is apple pie,” Kaitlyn said. “It is my favorite dish because I make it with love and with my family. It is sweet. One memory is my mom loves to sing in the kitchen.”

“My favorite Thanksgiving dish is my dad’s amazing stuffing that is like shepherd’s pie — it is a meal in itself. I have great memories of making this stuffing with him, and it is the best leftover, too!” Mrs. Fox said.
