Aspen college fair is top of the class

Dear Editor:

On Oct. 6, Aspen High School truly demonstrated the meaning of the phrase “it takes a village.” More than 2,000 high school students, plus their parents and chaperones, attended the Western Slope College Fair. Representatives from more than 200 major universities and colleges participated. Additionally, there were many workshops available for parents and students.

I had an opportunity to spend a few minutes with the representative from one of the top small universities on the East Coast discussing the value of these fairs. He told me that his job requires him to spend most of his time attending fair. He then went on to say that the Aspen fair was “far and away” (his words), the best of all the fairs. Otherwise, he continued, no one would have considered going beyond Denver.

As a parent and grandparent, I was so proud of our school and the efforts that were being expended by volunteers and staff on behalf of not only our children but on the students of the entire Western Slope.

More than 100 locals worked to run this fair, along with the “pros” who guide our students. I, personally, tip my hat to Kelly Doherty, the executive director and volunteer coordinator; John Maloy, the superintendent of schools; and Susan Walter who, along with Kathy Klug, founded this project. My highest praise goes out to Klug, who truly runs the show. She is nucleus of the program.

Thank you, Kathy and staff, and thank you to all who volunteered your time and efforts.
