Aspen chamber enables right-wing extremism

Dear Editor:

Last week, the board chairman of the Aspen Chamber Resort Association defended membership in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce even though that organization spent $132 million in 2010 on efforts exactly counter to Aspen’s goals on climate change. The board argued that “there are issues with which we agree with the U.S. chamber, like the need for responsible immigration reform, and the education programs sponsored by the U.S. chamber have been very beneficial to our Aspen chamber staff.”

But the job of the Aspen chamber is not to provide education opportunities to staff. And the fact that a radically right-wing organization like the U.S. chamber does something positive is a bankrupt argument. After all, the fascists made the trains run on time in Italy. But we didn’t support their broader policies or contribute money to their efforts.
