Aspen briefs: Resiliency presentation and fall health fairs

Girls Leadership Institute offers resiliency presentation

“Raising Resilient Girls,” a presentation for adults to help girls improve certain life skills, will be held Wednesday at the Aspen District Theatre on the local schools campus.

Simone Marean, executive director and co-founder of the institute, will share with parents and teachers how to help girls practice assertive self-expression, emotional intelligence and healthy relationships, preparing them for a life of personal and societal leadership. Her presentation will cover the development of girl dynamics from preschool through high school.

The event will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. It is free and open to the public, but the presentation is for adults only.

Topics will include:

  • • How and why girls of all ages are aggressive with one another.
  • • The “Good Girl” phenomenon: how the pressures of femininity, and the socialization of girls away from conflict, influence their aggressive behavior and approach to conflict.
  • Tools for avoiding victimization.
  • The importance of emotional intelligence for healthy conflict.
  • The importance of a plan for healthy communication and conflict at school and at home.
  • For information, visit, email Sami Carroll at sami@girls or call 303-587-9171.

Aspen Valley Hospital to host two fall health fairs

Aspen Valley Hospital will hold two health fairs in the coming weeks, one to serve the midvalley community and the other designed for seniors.

On Saturday, Midvalley Health Day takes place from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the El Jebel Community Center/Eagle County Government Building. Presented in partnership with Aspen Medical Care, Aspen Orthopaedic Associates, Aspen Vision Source and TLC Laboratory care, a variety of free and low-cost screenings will be offered.

Flu shots will be available for adults for $25. Laboratory tests include the standard health-fair profile with glucose, kidney and liver function, lipids, thyroid stimulating hormone and complete blood count. This test requires fasting for at least 12 hours (with the exception of water) and costs $48. A prostate-specific-antigen blood test for men costs $28.

Participants are strongly encouraged to schedule an appointment for their blood draw. This can be handled via the hospital’s website, Those with appointments will be given first priority.

The government building is located adjacent to the main stoplight in El Jebel on the City Market side of Highway 82.

The Senior Health Fair — for those 60 and older — will take place Nov. 1 at Aspen Valley Hospital. Sponsored by the hospital, Pitkin County Senior Services and Community Health Services, the fair will run from 8:30-10:30 a.m.

The same lab tests will be offered at Midvalley Health Day, and prices are also the same. In addition, a cardio-CRP blood test and colorectal cancer kits will be offered for $35 and $25 respectively. Appointments will not be scheduled for the senior fair.

Flu and pneumonia shots will be available at no cost for those with a Medicare card. Free screenings include blood pressure, oral health, vision, eye pressure, height, weight, body-mass index, peak flows, pulse oximetry and knee exams (wear shorts).

Participants should plan to pay by cash or check at both health fairs. For more information, call 970-544-1548.
