‘Aspen Astrologer’ suspended
The Aspen Times has suspended publication of “The Aspen Astrologer” column beginning today. The suspension will remain in effect until the criminal charges against writer Tomas Gregory are settled.
Gregory, whose full name is Tomas Gregory Brown, was arrested May 6 in Carbondale and charged with sexual assault on a child. News of the charges broke yesterday in The Aspen Times.
His accuser is a 13-year-old Carbondale girl whose family has been close to Gregory. The child alleged that Gregory said he had a “crush” on her and told both she and her younger sister that they were “yummy.” He also allegedly touched one of the girls on her buttocks, although she was fully clothed at the time, and stuck his hands under their shirts to massage their stomachs.
After considering the nature of the charges and the need to be sensitive to readers’ sensibilities, Aspen Times publisher Jenna Weatherred decided to pull his column, at least for the time being.
“We have a responsibility to our employees, contributors and our readers,” Weatherred said. “In this case, we feel our responsibility to our readers comes first.”
Noting that many readers turn to the horoscope on a daily basis, Weatherred said, “We’re not sure Tomas, under these circumstances, is the right person to be giving life advice to our readers.”
Weatherred said Gregory’s column ran yesterday because she and other managers didn’t want to rush to judgment. “Tomas has only been charged, not convicted,” she said.
She said that Gregory’s column will be reconsidered once the case is settled.
