A wonderful thing happened recently for art aficionados in Aspen: John and Amy Phelan, collectors of contemporary art who live in New York City and Aspen, are underwriting free admission for the next 10 years at the Aspen Art Museum, including exhibits and public programs. The Phelans are also members of the Aspen Art Museums national council and John is a member of the AAMs board of trustees. Since I never could seem to get the Aspen Art Museums annual Dennis Basso Freestyle silent auction and style show gala into the column, I will run it now. All these beautiful people are now returning to Aspen for the summer Aspen Art Museum events and all the other gala events, starting with the Food & Wine Magazine Classic in Aspen. The welcome reception for Food & Wine is Thursday, June 12, at the St. Regis Aspen; sponsored by American Express, St. Regis Hotels & Resorts and Trinchero Family Estates. The reception is followed by a weekend of food and wine tastings in the big tent, many dinners and cooking classes.Alder Yarrow, an Aspen High and Stanford University graduate, will give three seminars at the Food & Wine Classic. His award-winning website, vinography.com, gets more than 4 million hits each month. Alder is also the founder of president of Hydrant (hydrantsf.com), a consulting and design firm for small and large companies in the U.S. and around the world. Alder and his wife, Ruth, just had a beautiful baby girl. Alder is the son of longtime Aspenite Vicki Brooks, who now divides her time between Aspen and Stanford University. Undercurrent … Our neighborhood is looking sad this spring. The most beautiful lavender lilac bush in Aspen was in a corner of the Brumders yard on East Bleeker Street. However it was destroyed, along with many crabapple trees (with their pink blossoms), when the basement was dug for a remodel of the Brumder green cottage and for a new house to go on the second lot.
