Aspen approves summer concert at Rio Grande

ASPEN ” The Aspen City Council on Tuesday agreed to rent out Rio Grande Park so a concert can be held there on Aug. 5.

The council agreed to rent the park from Aug. 4-6 to an undisclosed concert promoter, who is currently negotiating with a band, which is expected to attract a crowd of between 2,500 and 3,000 people.

Organizers predict the demographics of the crowd will lean to the age range of 20 to 40 years old, of which 30 to 45 percent will come from out of town.

The event hasn’t gone through the city’s approval permit process but it will once a band has been selected, city officials said.

The event will happen rain or shine. If weather becomes an issue, and heavy rains saturate the park, it could be closed for two to three weeks to recover.
