Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) experienced a security incident on Sunday that led to the temporary closure of the commercial terminal for approximately two and a half hours, according to a press release.
All passengers and employees were safely evacuated as a precaution. Airport officials worked with the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to investigate the incident, which was determined to be a false positive in a checked bag.
Due to the baggage being isolated in the commercial terminal, general (private) aviation operations continued without interruption during this time, according to the press release.
The terminal successfully reopened at 2 p.m. Following the reopening, ASE, PCSO, TSA, and airline partners rescreened all baggage and passengers to ensure continued safety and minimal disruption to operations.
The airport expresses its gratitude to travelers for their patience and cooperation during today’s response, according to the press release.
